I have been recently heartened by continued evidence that Americans are beginning to warm to the idea they need to move to the center. As you know this has been a theme here and for good reason…it’s what we need to do as a nation to heal and move forward. I think we’ve gone from a gnawing away of woke resources to now, a gnawing away of far Left and far Right resources. Progress.

We’ve seen the lean most obviously from the Left. CBS has taken a decided turn to the center. MSNBC is now MS Now as NBC decided they wanted to jettison the (let’s face it) Left lean of the MS network. Keith Olberman, whom I find leads my list of formerly important people who now labor fruitlessly at small ball, is relegated to something on IHeart Radio. And most recently, expended considerable energy trying to defend his dating habits. That’s progress, in my book.

There are other examples but few rise to his level of sheer nastiness so you get it.

Now, we have the case of Marjorie Taylor Greene. Over her career, she has been a rabid far Right partisan. I’ve read summaries of a lot of her stuff, and while she has from time to time really stepped in it (Wanted Pelosi tried for treason…) by and large she espoused the hard edge of the Conservative line. But then broke with Trump and then he broke with her and she resigned. Perhaps she can be a guest on Mr. Olberman’s show. Nasty is as nasty does. Here’s a good summary:

But an example of fracture on the Right which naturally moves things a bit toward the center.

Then, we had the very strange (but not so strange) visit between the Socialist/Communist and the President. Many are perplexed at the love fest and especially Trump’s effusive praise. But as I’ve said 100 times…people seriously mistake Trump’s cunning for his apparent blabbing about whatever is on his mind, motivated by whatever TV show he’s recently watched.

Cunning like a fox, say I:

Consider what he accomplished. First, he disarmed any thoughts of the mayor using him as a lightning rod and foil to energize his base. Second, he presented himself as just a hometown boy wanting the best for the city in which he became, Donald Trump. But here’s the real coup de grace:

He threw a shiv right into the middle of the Democratic Party. Because while various Dems try and figure out how to handle the mayor, and how to avoid lurching the Party to the Left and how to marginalize the Socialist…

He can now say, “Hey! Trump likes me and will work with me! What about you Hakeem, and you Kathy, and you Chuck and…” So, Dems refusing to play ball with the S/C Mayor have a real problem…they appear to be sour and out of touch.

From all of this, I can confidently predict the following:

  1. Mr. Trump will most assuredly not deliver a victory to the S/C and so, in the end, he won’t show up with the Federal checkbook or helpful legislation.
  2. And if he shows up with a checkbook, guess who’s terms it will be on?
  3. Mr. Trump will, most assuredly, suddenly whip around like a snake and trash him. “Hey! I tried to work with him, but he’s a low IQ…and I’m extremely disappointed…etc.”
  4. The S/C is I believe too smart to have fallen for Trump’s act, but what can he do about it other than play along, until he can’t.
  5. And then as I’ve said before, S/C will try some small compromises to make progress and then eventually, his base will also whip around on him as a sellout and he’ll have those days where he’ll wonder why he ran.

And the fractures on the Right are more evident. And they will continue. As we move toward the 2026 mid-terms and beyond, each passing day will tag Mr. Trump as an increasingly large lame duck and the Reps, in jockeying toward 2028, will begin to feel free to break off and speak independently.

The basic idea is this: To the extent Mr. Trump filled the air with super-heated partisan rant, and to the extent that created super-heated partisan response from the Left, his absence turns down the temperature and people will begin to gravitate back to their normal postures:

Left-leaning centrists and Right-leaning centrists.

It will be as though we all got “it” out of our systems and we’re going to be ready for the political nap rug, coming down off the emotional sugar rush.

You can take that to the bank.
